Rice research institute of Nanjing agricultural university depends on the state key laboratory of crop genetics and germplasm enhancement (Nanjing agricultural university), and mainly engages in rice genetics and breeding, variety resources, germplasm innovation, variety improvement and application of new techniques and methods in the basic research work. Rice research institute has strong scientific research strength, and exists seven professors, five associate professors, four lecturers, two other researchers, two post-doctoral fellows, twenty-eight PhD candidates, and forty-two masters. In scientific research, it has successively applied for 973, 863, the national natural science fund, national science and technology support plan, national transgene special, and provincial high-tech projects, and so on. It has established the SSR, CAPS, InDel and dCAPS molecular markers techniques system, and applied to the resource selection, screening breeding population, and set up a perfect rice taste the technical indicators and evaluation methods, which provided the foundation of high quality of rice breeding for this unit, and took on the Jiangsu province high quality rice eating quality of rice comparison appraisal work, and established of a functional rice quality formation related gene localization and cloning research. Rice research institute screened 10,977 rice varieties for resistance to rice stripe virus (RSV), identified 212 RSV highly resistant varieties, mapped 24 RSV-resistant genes/QTLs, and cloned STV11. In addition, they report molecular cloning and characterization of brown planthopper (Bph3) gene, and provide new tools/resources for molecular breeding of insect-resistant rice cultivars. Rice research institute has engaged in genetics and breeding, molecular markers, gene cloning and transgenic research ability and conditions. There are 2-D electrophoresis system, RVA spectrum and Kjedhl nitrogen determination apparatus, fat tester, gel scanning system and other large instruments and equipment. In addition, also have a greenhouse, artificial climate chamber, and more than 300 acres of field.

Rice research institute identified/cloned 10 embryo sac abortion genes, 7 pollen abortion genes, 4 rice dormancy genes, 2 insect-resistant genes, and serials of key genes involved in glutelin biosynthesis, trafficking, and accumulation (OsPDIL1-1OsVPE1OsRab5aOsVPS9aOsKelch1OsGPA4) were isolated and characterized. Rice research institute has published more than 260 papers at home and abroad, including in the Nature, Nature biotechnology, Nature Communication, Developmental Cell, PNAS, Plant Cell, PloS Genetics, Plant J, Plant physiology such as SCI papers more than 140 articles.

In recent years, rice research institute was awarded the first prize for national science and technology progress prize, national technology invention award of the second, Chinese universities natural science prize, Chinese academy of agricultural sciences’ scientific and technological progress second prize, Zhejiang province scientific and technological progress second prize, Jiangsu province scientific and technological progress second prize, 16 patented, 15 for new plant varieties protection, 2 national umpire varieties, 4 provincial examination and approval varieties, and 8 existing high-quality, high-yield rice varieties, participate in national and Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Shanghai and other provincial regional test.
